VW Concept T
Full circle. Having unwittingly spawned the beach buggy and then ignored it, by 2004,
VW was thinking about this concept, but it didn't join its retro-style new Beetle in the showrooms.

Peugeot Touareg
Peugeot have made a couple of concept cars based on the beach buggy theme. This one, from 1996,
features a petrol/electric power unit, carbon fibre shell and some extremely funky wheels.

Citroen Mehari
A plastic body fitted on to a Citroën Dyane. Lots of variations of this utility/fun/military machine.
Popular in Francphone North Africa, so a true dune bug. Named after a type of camel.

Volksrod
British and, apparently, still going. Volksrod was important in popularising beach buggies in the 1970s
and indeed was the first UK-built design. From the very un-Californian city of Doncaster.

Karmann GF
Karmann of Germany made lots of pretty cars with VW underpinnings.
This, however, wasn't one of the most beautiful examples of their craftsmanship. Sold through VW dealers in Europe.

Berry Mini-T
Ingriguing variation on the dune-buggy theme from the 1970s. More of a beach-buggy-meets-Ford Model T than anything.
It was still pretty much all Volkswagen undeneath that retro body.

EMPI Imp
A more refined sort of buggy that could be used on the highway as well as on the dunes.
They called it the "Fun Car Kit With Extra Pride Built Right Into It". Nothing to do with the Hillman Imp.

Mini Moke
Originally conceived as a military vehicle, its minimal ground clearance hampered serious martial ambitions.
It wound up running around sunspots and Portmeirion for The Prisoner TV series.

Fiat Jolly
Not all buggies were Bugs. A chopped Fiat 500 manufactured by coach-builders Ghia was known at home as
La Spiaggina, meaning "beachette", elsewhere as the Jolly, or "Joker" in Italian.

Meyers Manx
Not the first buggy but the first with a glass-fibre body. Made in California in the 1960s
by a surfer named Bruce Meyers using VW Beetle bits. Much copied.
